Acupuncture is part of the ancient system of Chinese Medicine (CM) that dates back more than 2000 years. Other components of this medical system are Tuina (Medical massage), QiGong and Herbalism.

CM treats each person as unique and two patients with the same western diagnosis are likely to be treated quite differently. Amongst the diagnostic tools used by CM practitioners are pulse taking, tongue diagnosis, palpation and  observation  in order to identify imbalances and inform a tailor made treatment strategy.

Due to the holistic nature of treatment, acupuncture does not lend itself particularly well to western research methods such as randomised control trials. As acupuncture treats people, not conditions, these types of tests do not accurately demonstrate efficacy of treatment. However, there are approximately 8000 published clinical trials and current research related to over 60 conditions is available from the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) website here.

Over 3000 acupuncturists are registered with the BAcC with all practitioners having a minimum of 3600 hours of training at degree level. BAcC is a member of The Accredited Register Scheme run by The Professional Standards Authority and backed by the UK government.
